Zum ersten Mal in der Stadt? Hier finden Sie alles, was Sie wissen müssen, bevor Sie die Stadt erkunden.
Alexandroupolis is a city that “found its tracks” in the late 19th century. Originally a small fishing spot known as Dedeagatch, it transformed into a bustling hub thanks to the arrival of the international railway. Its unique urban layout, featuring wide streets that lead straight to the sea, was famously designed by Russian engineers during the late 1870s, giving the city its distinct European character.
The city’s identity is deeply connected to its liberation. In 1920, after centuries of Ottoman rule, the city was officially incorporated into Greece. It was then renamed Alexandroupolis to honor King Alexander I, who visited the area shortly after its freedom. This transition from “Dedeagatch” to “Alexandroupolis” marked the beginning of its journey as a modern Greek maritime center.
Today, the city is a vibrant destination where history and nature coexist beautifully. From its iconic Lighthouse—a beacon since 1880—to the nearby legendary Cave of the Cyclops and the stunning Evros Delta, there is always something to explore. Whether you’re visiting for the lively “Eleftheria” celebrations or a quiet sunset stroll by the port, you’ll feel the warm, authentic hospitality of the Thracian soul.
